Often the most surprising aspect of mass shootings perpetrated by individuals in this country is their families complete disbelief following the event. Although there are warning signs that occur in some mass shooting events, family members disconnected over time or through distance may have the same reaction to the horrifying news as regular citizens. This is very much the case when it comes to the reaction of Eric Paddock, the suspected shooters brother.

According to Eric Paddock, his brother was simply someone who gambled and lived near Vegas. He could not even come close to describing possible motives for his brothers’ horrific actions. Eric described the last contact he’d had with his brother to be following Hurricane Irma when he received a text asking if their mother was OK. In the TV interview in which Eric disclosed this information, he appeared flustered and in shock as one might expect after hearing the awful news.

In a community so far removed from the tragedy out West, it is surprising to see parts of this growing investigation hit so close to home. A collective hope for meaning or explanation of why the event took place will most likely remain in the minds of Americans until something can be uncovered.
