New Music Release Breaking Records

It’s not very common a young artist’s debut single is globally successful, smashing records made by long time big artists in the music industry, but this is a reality for Olivia Rodrigo. At only 17 years old, Olivia Rodrigo released her debut single “drivers license” on January 8th, 2021 and it took the world by surprise.

Olivia’s “drivers license” is powerful ballad driven “pop” or “indie pop” song, about Olivia mourning over the breakup between an ex lover, and how him moving on hurt her despite everything they promised each other. Hitting number 1 on the billboard hot 100 in simply a week, the song has reigned the charts ever since as #1. Quickly after its release, the song broke the Spotify record for the most streams in a day for a song that is not a holiday related on January 11th, with 15.7 million streams. Olivia was then able to break that same record the next day with 17 million streams. Her debut single has also been named as “the biggest selling debut number one in five years”, which was previously dominated by Zayn Malik in 2016. The single has also reached number one on Spotify’s U.S chart, overall Apple Music’s chart, and Amazon Music’s overall top songs chart. Although some may say the song took off this incredibly due to the “surrounding drama” between her co-star Joshua Basset and Sabrina Carpenter’s said relationship involvement in the love triangle Olivia sings about, there is no doubt Olivia’s immense amount of talent and dedication surpasses that. The song is not only incredibly written and produced, but Olivia’s voice is angelic and shows such emotion in the song. Who knows what other records she will set and break with her upcoming music career?
