Competition Dancers

Hannah Juda, Author

Competitive dancers are pictured differently than in reality. Watching shows like “Dance Moms” promotes an image that is produced. Competitive dancers train multiple hours a week and practice dances months before a competition. In the show “Dance Moms” the dance teacher Abby Lee is told to be mean and harsh on the students and parents. In the dance world, teachers are super supportive and nice to students. Competitive dancers train in many styles including ballet, hip hop, jazz, and tap. Winning a competition is harder than what tv shows, dancers are being judged on costume, technique, and creativity. In dances, everyone has to look the same, if one thing is wrong you get points deducted. Dancer Lexi Babadelis says “I think it’s a good experience, you learn valuable things that help you in all aspects of life.”  Dancers wake up as early as 6 o’clock in the morning and won’t get back home till 11 or 12 at night on competition days.
